Which application do you use? I had this with vdr + pvr350-plugin, which was 
using a lot of direct fwapi calls. I replaced them against ioctl commands 
(unfortunately, channel switching is much slower now -but this is another 
story...)
At the same time Hans fixed the firmware timeout problem in all branches, and I 
can`t rember any timeouts since that time. I am using v4f-dvb hg with ivtv 
trunk. Kernel 2.6.15 and now 2.6.17.6
