Appologies for replying to myself - I discovered one more thing.  This *seems* to only affect the second card, /dev/video1. After all of the complaints in /var/log/messages, it seems I can still run mplayer /dev/video0 but mplayer /dev/video1 hangs.  I'm going to disable /dev/video1 from myth and see how long that lasts.
