These applications only work with 'dumb' framegrabber cards (i.e., bttv 
type cards).  They are not intended to work with cards (like the 
PVR-250) that output MPEG video.  MythTV is the only application that 
I'm aware of (maybe Freevo?) that can handle *both* the tuning & 
viewing of the output of these cards.  As you've found out, you can use 
other apps like MPlayer which are capable of playing the content 
straight from /dev/videoX, but you need to use another application 
(ivtv-tune.pl) to change the channel, AFAIK.

You can set mythfrontend to use a windowed mode instead of full screen.  
If you're having problems getting MythTV configured properly (i.e., 
can't change channels), try the mythtv-users list.
