Ok, so I did a little more experimenting. I discovered that the ubuntu installer had put in the "irqpoll" kernel parameter to /boot/grub/menu.lst. If I remove it, 2.6.22 won't boot. If I add the "acpi=off" option instead of "irqpoll", it also boots fine, and ivtv works fine too, even without the "nosmp" kernel parameter. So that gives me smp and ivtv. I can live with that. But since ivtv works with either the "nosmp" or the "acpi=off" parameter, I think yes, it is a problem with my HW, BIOS or whatever and not an ivtv problem. I'll try to update my BIOS when I get a chance. But thanks for your input, time and patience.
