It is usually /lib/firmware on Fedora and RedHat.

The ftp server gzip's the already gzipped files that I uploaded.  I
haven't bothered to figure out how to fix that yet.

To get around the problem, do something like this:

$ gunzip -v ivtv-firmware.tar.gz
$ mv ivtv-firmware.tar ivtv-firmware.tar.gz
$ tar -xzvf ivtv-firmware.tar.gz
