Greetings,

There are a couple of things we can learn from the success of the
Arduino: 1) folks are willing to pay a little extra for a pre-
programmed chip with the bootloader, 2) folks are willing to purchase
a USB or RS232 level-shifter separately.

Thankfully, most modern OS's have built-in support for the 3 or 4
popular USB level-shifter chip-sets. I've also had good luck with
buying very inexpensive clones of cell-phone cables, such as the Nokia
CA-42.

If I were selling a product, I'd go with a bootloader, and a socketed
cpu if possible. And I'd include line items in the catalog for
programming cables and also pre-programmed chips. And my PCB would
have the same simple serial/programming connector as the Arduino
boards.
