False alarm... The problem turned out to be that I was starting phoenix (and james) using the 'run.sh' script which doesn't detach from the current shell, so when my session timed out in the middle of the night all of my jobs were killed, including james. Now that I'm using 'start' with phoenix everything is working.

If it ends up in var/mail/spam, then James is done with it. It has already
been received, put into the spool, processed through the spool, matched, and
eventually stored as spam.

I'm used IBM JVM for testing in the past without error. I'm really curious
to see what you find with your tests, and what this eventually turns out to
have as the cause.
