I had the same problem with the Debian 2.1 distribution. Unlesssomeone
builds .rpms (or .debs in my case) its MUCH easier to install a fresh
apache. (I wrestled with Debian for ~15 hours and installed fresh in
about 1.5).
Still, it is a bummer that you lose all of the built-in functionality
that
comes with a pre-packaged Apache (like log rotation scripts, etc.)
