IT WORKED!!!!!
Thank you very much for those trying to help especially Edmund. I must
admit, though, that it took a
combination of his document, the one in
http://www.magiccookie.com/computers/apache-jserv/ and the INSTALL document.
For those interested, besides the typos, here are the errors that prevented
me from installing successfully much sooner:
1. I run RedHat 5.1 - most of the sample installations are for R/H 5.2
2. I first started off trying to use JDK1.2 - It gives me an OutOfMemory
error. The docs advise that I should make a change and recompile the
Kernel. I am too unfamiliar with Linux to do that.
3. JDK1.2 requires glibc2.1 which is incompatible with JDK117. When I
discovered that, I de-installed glib2.1 and my system became unstable.
4. I re-installed RedHat 5.1 entirely and suddenly found that things worked
a lot better.
My advice for others having to fight the same fight -> If you can,
re-install RedHat 5.x cleanly and then work through the docs.
Thank you once again for your help. I am for now just revelling in success
before tackling the other head aches (GPL and JSP)

I ended up uninstalling the RedHat Apache distribution and installing the
1.3.6 from the Apache site using the Apache docs exactly. My suggestion is
to do the same. RedHat puts the files in a weird place as far as I'm .
