I'm not affiliated with any part of the JServ project, although I use the
sw. I've been using JServ for quite a bit, but haven't found that "very
protective of their baby" to be a factual statement. I guess there are 2
types of critiscism, constructive and throwing stones ... quite often it is
in the phrasing that separates the two.

> "The customer is always right," eh?
In "Open-Source" the customer is always allowed to fix and submit ... that's
part of the credo.

I got the whole thing working over a beer after work (apache+jserv+...).
You are on a complex environment, messing up stuff outside of the basic
install can cause difficulties. Any commercial product you get will have
the same debug time for screwing up outside of the box ... the other nice
thing about Open-Source .. if you really want responsive support, you can
pay for it (like red-hat, caldera, etc.)

If you use DEC, Oracle, etc products they always want you to work out a
default install. That might be a good suggestion in this case too. Setup a
standard configuration, and then make changes to it. At least you'll know
what broke it. I guess if you're a newbie you can't remember the days when
having a different network card would put your very expenseive tech support
into a "just best try area".

my 1 cent.
