You can probably afford Solaris for Intel (about $500). In fact, Sun
has a promotion: for the cost of mailing (about $20) they send you a
non-commercial Solaris 7 copy (no dev.). I can't say if Sun's Intel
JVM is any good in all senses, but it seems to work well for me under
light loads (it has been running two weeks non-stop).

BTW, I'm not associated in any way with Sun
