OK. I'm really hoping I could get some help here...
I have tried the blackdown 1.3.1 JRE, 1.2.2 JRE, and the Sun 1.3.1 JRE, all with corresponding plugins for Netscape (using 4.78). In each case, I get the same odd result. Once the PATH is set properly, the java command works fine. Note: $ java -version java version "1.2.2" Classic VM (build Linux_JDK_1.2.2_FCS, native threads, sunwjit) From the command line, I can run the ControlPanel for the plugin just fine. However, running the plugin from the browser (either Netscape or Opera 5.05TP1) gets me just a blank Java Console (it identifies itself properly, and that's it), after I enabled it in the ControlPanel. Now, with version 1.3.1 (either the blackdown version or the Sun version), I noticed that I could run the java executable, but not the java_vm executable located in native_threads. At first, it couldn't find libjvm.so. After setting the LD_LIBRARY_PATH to include the three directories that file was in, I got "cannot find VM symbols" (sorry, going from memory here). Running an strace showed me that it was still crapping out on trying to find libjvm.so (even though ldd found the libjvm.so just fine). Since I'm using an older version (Redhat 6.1) of glibc (glibc-2.1.2-11), which barely meets the requirements of the Sun JRE, and not those of the blackdown JRE, I thought it may be a glibc issue. This led to me downloading the 1.2.2 JRE and plugin today, in hopes of those working. Same result (except there's no java_vm executable, so I can't test that)...I can run the ControlPanel fine, but trying to run it from the browser (in Netscape) gets me a Java Console (blank, except for identifying itself), and a blank square in the center with "Loading Java Applet" just staying there. Opera is even worse, it gives me just a blank spot where that is, and doesn't even open the Java Console. The shell I started Opera from gives me "Error in initializing function pointer xislocked_fn". I could understand if 1.3.1 didn't work due to glibc issues (even though the Sun one is supposed to be able to work), but why not 1.2.2? The whole point of this was that I wanted to have Java in Opera! I don't really need the plugin in Netscape, as the Java machine it comes with works just fine for me (the few times I use it). Any ideas?
