        Well, for starters, Calvin Austin supplied me with an updated
font.properties file.  

        That *almost* worked, the other part of the solution was to
add

        /usr/share/fonts/default/Type1
        
        in the /etc/X11/fs/config  file.

        That took care of all the fonts warning.

        But still no success with Opera...
