How did you install the 1.3.1 plugin?  With a symlink to
javaplugin.so?

java_vm should not be invoked directly.  The plugin uses java_vm
internally and should set LD_LIBRARY_PATH automatically.

Please set JAVA_PLUGIN_TRACE=1 and send the output you get when plugin
starts up.
