IIRC RedHat 6.1 used a different family name for the symbol font. Try:
% cd .../j2re1.3.1/lib
% mv font.properties font.properties.orig
% sed -e 's:standard symbols l:symbol:' font.properties.orig > font.properties
(In any case make sure you have the URW fonts installed. You should
have a file called s050000l.pfb in some directory listed in our
fontpath.)
