U was unlucky enough to get the piece of junk which is proudly called
ATI video card. I used to think that it's only me who had performance
problems with this card (the card i have at work is ATI RAGE128, a
little bit more advanced, but...). So, some guys out here say that
this card itself accelerates OpenGL much worse than TNT-based cards do. But
the main problem to my mind is the drivers. Eg, the drivers that
provide OpenGL hardware acceleration (at least 4 Java3D) under Win9x
platforms were published only in Febrary, 2000, that is ~1 year after
the card has been released (the one i have). Before that time under
Win9x u could 'enjoy' software acceleration only (assuming u used OpenGL
version of Java3D, since DX version worked fine (that is it was
hardware accelerated) since the very beginning.

As far as i remember one guy here (Vincent Erickson, if i'm not mistaken)
has (or used to have) the very same card and as i could understand he didn't
succeed to get OpenGL hardware acceleration after all.

I suggest u to look for driver updates on ATI site first and if u fail
to find the updates that would enable hardware acceleration, go for
smth TNT based (Videoblaster from Creative Labs worked 4 me just
fine).
