Yes, Lots of research effort has/is going into this.....

Search the web/ebay for a product called Canoma, this will generate 3d vrml
models from 2d pictures.

Adobe will now be selling it since they bought it from MetaCreations.

It's ok but you really have to work with it and learn what is good input
for it. Rember it's a process.
