Just my 2c to this:

A much simpler problem is, if you take only pictures of rotation symetric
objects and using sweeping for reconstruction.

Check http://www.eyetronics. com

They use the following technique for 3D scanning: A grid is projected on the
object. If you take pictures of the object from different sides you can
reconstrut the object from these pictures with the help of the distortion of the
grid on the object.
