Yes, this is right. However there is an unreleased version of DirectX 5 for
NT (which doesn't have a setup even, but you can find it on the net
everywhere else but MS's site :)...
The reason for unsupported DirectX on NT is the fact that DirectX REQUIRES
direct hardware access (DHA) which is impossible with NT (unless very
special circumstances are meet, e.g. HAL device drivers). DX3 has limited
DHA so it can run on NT. This problem is solved in NT5 (a.k.a. Windows 2000)
where you will find a DirectX 8 version.
NT4 was not designed for "games"... This was a compromise in the favor of
stability. Noone probably seen that in "future" DX will be so necessary for
serious stuff...
So I guess this is +1 point for NT (in stability and virus protection)
and -1 point for MS since now it seams "stupid": "Go figure, Microsoft can't
even support their own stuff"...
Well... think whatever you want. I prefer the +1 anytime...
