Hello,
The MCRLab at the University of Ottawa has developed an MPEG4
encoder/decoder of 3D scenes for rendering in Java3D. We are interested
in making it available to the Java3D community but are not sure of the
best mechanism. Should it be donated to Sun or Web3D (like the
VRMLLoader)? Should it be open sourced and available through our
website? What is the best way of distribution? Any suggestions
especially from those familiar with such issues (such as the VRMLLoader
developers) would be greatly appreciated.
The MPEG4 encoder/decoder has the following capabilities and is
entirely writen in Java:
- Load VRML scene and display in Java3D
- Encode the scene according to MPEG4's Binary Format for Scenes
(BIFS: a compressed and binary format for scene description)
- Decode MPEG4 BIFS scenes and display in Java3D
We believe that this encoder would be of interested to the Java3D
community especially to those who are involved in Distributed Virtual
Environments. The small size of the scenes and the ability to stream
them makes MPEG4 BIFS very attractive for use of DVE applications on the
Internet.
We've also developed MPEG4's access units (encoded update messages used
to animate objects for remote users) and may make those available as
well, if there is interest and the distribution of the encoder/decoder
is successful.
Any helpful comments are appreciated.
