Hello,
Thank you very very much Alan Hudson for your comments. It gave me an
idea of how much of an undertaking releasing the code is. What scares me
off is the MPEG4 IP issue that you mentioned. I'm an engineer and by
default know absolutely nothing about legal issues. That's why I posted
the idea on the list in the first place. I am hoping that the entity
taking over the code would take care of the MPEG4 IP issue. The entire
code is ours but we've used the MPEG4 Systems (ISO/IEC 14496-1) document
as the guideline of implementation so I have no clue what kind of
permission is required from the MPEG people. I have to say that I have
received only 3-4 emails back from this group showing interest. If the
interest in a Java3D MPEG4 BIFS encoder/decoder is that little, I wonder
if going through all the legal procedures is worth it.
As for future involvement, I am currently the only person working on
the project but as long as I am here (MCRLab), I will be working on the
framework and extending it and am willing to put in some time managing
the codebase.
There are virtually no internal hurdles on releasing the open source
as long as it is not used by anyone for commercial purposes. Is that a
reasonable request?
Once again, thank you very much for your feedback. I would be glad to
hear from others if they are interested in this.

                                                        Mojtaba Hosseini
