Hello,

My name is Alan Hudson and I'm the chair of the Open Source group at the
Web3D consortium. I'm also a major developer on the Xj3D project.

You definately have an interesting codebase there. Open sourceing the
code would be a good thing. One question, have you cleared the IP
issues related to MPEG4? There are several patents surround the BIF's
encoding. The consortium has worked closely with the MPEG4 group, but
it has always been difficult for us to understand the IP issues
surrounding MPEG4.

If we can clear the IP issue then I'd be happy to help you make this
codebase open source. Depending on what level of involvement you want
we can determine how best to release the code. The source group has
access to CVS and other development resources. It could take over the
sheparding of the code. How much future development is your group
considering for this code?

The most successful projects have a core group of folks who are
intersted in furthering development of the project. Would a member of
your group want this role? This person typically controls who has write
access to the codebase and generally serves as point for the project.

Other groups have just given a codebase over without any future
involvement. This can be helpful to community, but generally these
codebases stagnate. Their might be enough interest from others for
someone to pickup the codebase and run with it. From the Xj3D side we
would love to incorporate a BIF's encoding for streaming.

Another question would be how much involvement will be required from
your legal department. The consortium has experience with drafting
agreements for code release. Have you cleared the internal hurdles to
releasing the code as open source?

Lots of questions but an exciting concept.
