Benchmarking Game Performance ... should include Linux ...

and a large range of polygon counts and standard
3d objects including Web3d's H-Anim Avatars which
includes Human Models with many articulated joints
as is required in ASL Signing and Finger Spelling.

A solution I bring with the obvious problem that this
sounds like an overwhelming task:

The Wonderful Engineers at Sun created VRML Loaders
for Java3d that do all that ... load any of THOUSANDS of VRML
objects, many created by talented artists, many including
Human Animation including walking, running, and Fingerspelling
and the H-Anim standard allows motions to be shared across
various models, hardware platforms, and operating systems,
and rendering subsystems.

Web Game performance benchmarks of __ cross platform __
solutions is __ GREATLY NEEDED __ and would be much be
appreciated ( and gain widespread discussion, and
a good study would advance the art and science which
has been mired in slow progress, proprietary,
conflicting, and non-working non-standards as is seen
the VRML community where VRML players too frequently
fail to play VRML content properly, if at all.

  | I am the process of writing a graduate CS report where
  | I evaluate Java as a game platform ... [ and will ]
  | run some benchmarks with Java3D.
  |
  | My question here is; does Java3D 1.3 beta 1 has different
  | performance characteristics that 1.2? Is it faster?
  |
  | I ask because it is essential that I use the version
  | with the highest performance for my benchmarks.

PLEASE do more than just one OS and have both web
and multiplatform solutions ... the world of 3d Games
has moved beyond the desktop and beyond the x86 ...

Don't stay in the 1900's mindset and tethered to a powercord.

The future of games is in phones, portable and new, networked
devices including TV boxes ... the door is open: enter.

You can __ EASILY __ run on multiple hardware and OS platforms
with a ___ SINGLE __ program and a __ SINGLE __ data file using:

   1) Java
   2) VRML -- including animation & interaction.

and even create movie animations as you can see here:

Critical -- and arguabably more important -- and closely related
is MPEG-4 streaming animation which uses VRML, H-Anim, and Java3d
( in some implementations ): It is huge -- and will be lucrative -- :
