As I understand it, sharing geometries will reduce memory use in both main memory and the video card. So when applicable that is a good way to save memory and still have a large scene. However, this would need to be confirmed by A J3D team member. I may be that it only saves memory on the video card if the scene was "compiled".
In modeling, reusing the geoemetry or part of a model is called "instancing".
