As others have mentioned these cards aren't exactly top notch.

The three cards/machines that I have access to for testing my app (300
spheres, ~300 cones/complex models, each with raster labels and some
other transparent objects) are as below;

1. P4-1.7Ghz, 512MB, ATI Rage 128Pro 32MB, NT4
2. P3-600, ~300MB, Geforce 1 DDR 32MB, W2k
3. P3-1Ghz, 512MB, Geforce 3 64MB, W2k

Performace wise

1. is fairly poor about 5-8fps with everything on
2. is acceptable at 12-15fps
3. is mostly good at 18-26fps

this is at the same res in 32bit colour.

So I'd say the minimum you want to look at is definatly a Geforce 3 Ti
(should be faster then my original GF3). I think you're running
something like 15k spheres? So even this might not be enough, but should
make a better starting block.
