The general issue with this approach is that is uses trig functions to
do the computation. Trig is really, really expensive and you really
don't want to be using it in the internals of a realtime rendering loop
- particularly when there's thousands of iterations per second. The
normalisation of the vector approach works very nicely and uses a lot
less CPU resources.
