Six months ago, we picked up a Toshiba with a GeForce for under $2000
for one person that works for me.  It's a VERY nice machine and runs
Java 3D very well.  It is *noticably* slower (easily measured lower
frame rates) than a "comparable" desktop though.  But it is perfectly
adequate for high end 3D work.
