You're seeing blue and red in the bump mapping?! I think you've got other problems! If you are seeing that, then you don't have texture combine mode and/or DOT3 bumpmapping supported on your hardware. The red/blue image is the normal map (should be mainly blue with red bits) that is used as the first stage of the multitexture pipeline. You should see some output on the command line that says how many texture units your Java3D thinks your card supports. What number does that say? Here, with GeForce4 2Go it is 2, Quadro 440XL it is 4 and Radeon 9700 is 8.
