Hi Justin, I am working at the University of Karlsruhe in Germany we are developing a 3D-GIS-Extension with Java 3D for a Java based Geographic Information System since the year 2000. The tool is used in local authorities of Baden-Württemberg, which is a state of Germany. For more information look at: http://www.ipf.uni-karlsruhe.de/Personen/hilbring/projekteengl.html
When I started with Java 3D a few years ago I had no experience in graphics programming and considered Java 3D the right API to use. I am really confident with Java 3D and I do really like the scenegraph approach. Looking for the future, I really like to use it further on. More preferrable - I'd like Java 3D to be completely open sourced, but really I want to be someone to be a steward od the codebase to make sure that there is a central "reference" implemenentation to work with. Less preferrable - I'd like Java3D to be completely open sourced so that I can take it and support/develop it myself. With the source code available, my own projects can continue to move forward.
