I've had the JDK 1.5 install blow up on a fresh new machine (no Java 3D involved at all). From my clients comments and my own experience I doubt I'll even look at JDK 1.5 for another six months.
Sun really needs to get back to basics and stop adding features.

One thing you might need to do. If you install a new JDK or JRE, then you must re-install J3D into the new Java install. The J3D install loads DLLs and JARs into the new Java install folders.
