There is a nice quip from Gosling on exactly this point   -in an
interview by Michael Cote  (RedMonkRadio podcast)

Gosling says "Turing was right!"

the JVM might be the worst design ever BUT it can still compute
anything computable

Actually, if Gilad Bracha is to be believed, having types in the VM,
as the jvm and clr do  is "the worst idea in the history of
computing"  (i think those are his words -from lang.net 2007
presentation)  -the man must be relieved to be working on smalltalk
vm's again
