This is an interesting point. If you take a technology where there is essentially standards based such as BPEL, I think we can effectively argue that you are free to use the IDE to build a standards based artifact and then take it and deploy it to some other container / vendor that supports the same standard at will. However, there are two gotchas: 1) Are you tempted by an implementations "value add" or are you disciplined enough to stick to the letter of the standards even if it costs you more to develop? 2) With a preferred Middleware stack, the end-to-end "diagram to deploy" processes provided by the tool makes it much easier to target say the Oracle BPEL server, but I think that's reasonable - after all we want to encourage folks to use our Middleware and I see tools as a key part of the equation.
However, the take-home was that just touching the tool will not instantly assimilate you into the Borg, and I think that point was made well, although everyone listening to the 'cast missed out out Teds theatrical Matrix moves (which is a shame).
