For me Groovy/Grails was the best discovery of 2008, and I can see a place for the combo in the Enterprise world - initially Groovy for scripting/testing.
Regarding the low profile, perhaps Groovy/Grails is more of a European thing? There certainly seems to be more of a buzz around Groovy/ Grails from Devoxx than any of the US based conferences. Finally, I thought the SpringSource acquisition of G2One was huge news as it gives a clear indication of where SpringSource is going - full Enterprise stack.
