But "hideous" is a judgement call that depends on your needs.  For the
kinds of problems for which dynamic scripting languages are well
suited performance is usually a secondary concern.  And where
performance is a bottleneck you can always write in Java or Scala.
And where that's not fast enough you can FFI into C.
