NB 6.5 on 64-bit Ubuntu 8.10 has been very fast and solid for me. I'm
hard pressed to think of a single problem (apart from bugs that are
apparently common to all platforms, such as the code coverage plugin
not working with Maven projects). I have also run NB 6.5 on the same
machine under XP. I can't say I noticed any speed difference, apart
from the usual sluggish (maybe just clunky?) feel of X-Windows.

Speed-wise I'm far more concerned about whether the server product I'm
working on will be slower when deployed on Linux than Windows. I've
heard the JVM is better-optimized on Windows, but I'm anxious to do
some testing and find out for myself.
