As I said, the Intel driver works great. It's mostly Nvidia that sucks. It doesn't matter what hadware you have, it's the driver. Also as I said, the firefox problems is very much attributed to the Nvidia driver. Try installing the latest beta driver from nvidia and you will notice a significant improvement in firefox.
"X-Windows" as you call it is very dependent on a good driver implementation.
