Would just like to say to Stephen: Fine work in hunting down what this mess is really about. Never knew this committee thing could got so politically complex.
FWIW, there is one discrepancy I can see in Sun's behaviour insofar as the (limited) EC meeting minutes can tell: Sun wants to trade a loss of control against getting a more or less free ride in getting a possible eventual Umbrella java7 JSR passed through the EC without any issues. Why? What's sun's angle and purpose here? Avoid more political bloodshed? Force 'their' view of what java ought to become down the throats of the EC? I don't really get the feeling that sun wants to take java into a direction that is loathed by a sufficient number of EC members that they can't get it there without resorting to these tricks. Considering how long-running this feud really is, it makes no sense for sun to have invested all that time in this feud just to avoid a possible minor skirmish around java7 features later. No sense at all. Is there going to be a bombshell in the java7 spec that would warrant all of that? Even if there was, the EC is not going to hand a get-out- of-jail-free pass to sun in regards to the umbrella JSR - if some crazy bombshell is in there, they'll take back their word to let it sail through, obviously. So, what? Why? I'm confused.
