I suspect the discrepancy between the stats below and what I read, and what was reported by Ryan's safekids.org link is the definition of what is tracked. safekids.org refers to unintentional death by firearms, which is what people typically refer to when they want to not have guns at home. Intentional death by firearms probably refers more to things like gang violence. It's still a horrible number of deaths, of course, but isn't as relevant to the 'gun at home' vs 'swimming pool at home' comparison.
