At our company we developed a reporting application using JSF 1.2. It
was way better than some other technologies I've used, but it does
indeed have its difficulties. I think it has some really great ideas,
but some of the greatness was lost in how the ideas were implemented.

I too, am a lover of The Groovy now. We are evaluating Grails as an
option for our next-generation app, along with the usual suspects for
rich client interfaces.

I agree that JSF 2.0 might be worth looking into.
