The Ruby community is very odd. Really smart, innovative bunch of people. But they think IDEs are a waste and dropping to C code is how you get performance.
I love the ruby language. more fun coding in it than anything I've ever used. but the runtime is junk. I think once invoke dynamic is fully baked and JRuby becomes 5x faster than all the other (terrible) ruby run-times the ruby community will have no choice but to embrace the JVM.
