I think you folks are looking at this from the wrong perspective. Last year SpringSource bought Covalent Technologies. Covalent supplies technical support for the Apache Web Server and Apache Tomcat. That places SpringSource in the enterprise infrastructure support and maintenance service business. VMWare sees its future not in terms of running Windows on Mac OS X, but providing images of software stacks that run on their virtual machine appliances (desktop, server, or in the cloud). So acquiring SpringSource makes for a strong addition to their product/expertise in this area. All things considered, a good move by VMWare.
