Plug your cable, drag down the notification bar, click on "Select to copy files to/from your computer" and the SD card should mount. "There is room for the date as far as I can tell." Well that depends on what kind of notification icons you have. Remember Android revolves around multi-tasking and this is your always- accessible unified notification inbox.
