Until we have a true universal virtual machine build into the browser (keep an eye on the Mono guys), this is the world we have to live with. Your point is absolutely correct, JavaScript in particular is a mess... but thankfully we now have cross-compilation libraries like GWT and FWT to abstract these burdens away. Microsoft almost went this path as well with Volta, but it got cancelled... probably due to a concern that it would conflict with Silverlight.
