I wonder if people are reading more into this than there is. Yes, the
European part of Sun is taking a big hit. And why not? It is harder to do
business over there with all the employment rules. The EU blocked the sale
for a long time and cost Oracle a ton of money and lost opportunity. And
with most of the business here in the US where it can be controlled, they
should do much better. These markdowns are a common financial tool used to
clean the books. If anything, they may look lots better in a year or two
once things get off the books.
