Have you considered the possibility of working remotely? I think it is do-able in this day and age, and if you can make it work then the place you reside will not matter as far as work and career is concerned.
You can then stay at a place where you *want* to stay (perhaps where you have family and friends... or maybe just a place you find good and beautiful) without worrying about whether you will find work there.
