Sounds very interesting Carl. I know Autodesk's offerings although I don't have a lot of experience with them. A lot of the GIS world belongs to .NET, since ESRI is very Microsoft centric. Most of my experience is with ESRI tools (I worked for that company for about 2.5 years) and have done a lot of .NET in the past. I hate that platform and don't want to go back if I can avoid it. I have also done a lot of JEE stuff, always related to GIS in some way or another. GIS is not immature per se, ESRI has been around for 40 years now. But it is certainly becoming more mainstream and changes happen faster than in other areas, which I find exciting.
These days I am doing JEE in the backend, with ESRI and open source technology, JavaScript and Flex in the front end with both commercial and open source as well. Open source is becoming more important although ESRI clearly dominates in this industry. In the near future I hope to go into the cloud computing space and probably even start my own business, who knows. So for me exciting times ahead, but I do feel everyone else's pain, it hasn't been that long since my salary was around 1000 € / month and most of it went to pay the mortgage.
