I know that London has a shortage of Java jobs. The problem is that London is crazy go nuts expensive especially to someone who grew up in Yorkshire (probably opposite end of the UK spectrum pretty much). I hear part of the shortage problem is the kind of salary a junior developer earns even in London is not enough to be able to afford to live there. I imagine those who work there are probably already from that area. I hear stories of professionals in their 30s still living with their parents in London because they cannot afford to pay for a place of their own.
I have not ruled out the business world. I got a bit sick of the rat race and how everything was just money money money given I was technology centric and not money / business centric. I hoped the move to to Academia would give me the freedom to develop interesting technology which was not instantly be monetized. It seemed in the business world if I suggested any development which was not going to make money in the short term it was a non started. Quite possibly I may have just have had unfortunate experiences of not working for the best possible businesses. I got to a point where I was working all hours barely keeping my head above water for people who didn't seem to appreciate me that much. It felt like it might be more fulfilling to do some work which was about making a positive difference in the world rather than making money (which I wasn't doing very well anyway).
