Not necessary.  I believe that open source and proprietary
languages/platforms/softwares will coexist for long time.
Just look at MS .Net as an example.  Besides, the android model is not
perfect neither, I am sure many phone manufacturer
choose android mainly because it is the only option out there to compete
IPhone.

The UI builder for Android 1.5 was pretty bad if I remember correctly.  It
was easier to code UI in xml that tells you how bad it was ...
at least for me.  I also hate how Android generates class that maps to your
UI component.  Personally I think if there is a
need to auto-generate code, at least hide it from me.  Project Lombok is a
great example of how code generation should be done.

I am working on a entry level math educational software at my spare time, I
am about 1/3 of where I want it to be.
It might never see sun light but at minimum I hope it will help enrich my
resume :)
