I agree, as I consider this to be the normal thing. I'm a strong advocate of FLOSS, but I don't think that non-FLOSS things are necessarily bad. It's good to have both, since it's more choice for people. FLOSS, indeed, could have some bad time ahead, in some sectors, if the forecast about the new penetration of smartphones/iStuff are right; that is if a huge portion of people will have smartphones/pads as the only point of contact with computer technology and services. My point is that those people won't get in touch with the "classic" computer science culture, thus bypassing the current state of the art of FLOSS culture. They'll be only focused on having that app/service, caring the less (even zero) about technicalities. I don't even know how to explain FLOSS to this kind of people, as mentioning "source code" is a technicality (I've extensively blogged about that, if you want more points). Add that iPhone/iPad are the perfect opposite of FLOSS and you complete the point. Recently Simon Phipps mentioned this aspect is one of the things that OSI should work on, and I think he's right, but I'd like to know what are the things that they are going to do. - -- Fabrizio Giudici - Java Architect, Project Manager Tidalwave s.a.s. - "We make Java work.
