Coming late on this thread, but I was in my last two days of summer
holidays (!) and consumed all my mobile traffic credits, so no
Internet for a while.

I think that the average in Italy is 33 days per year, with some
flexibility, and on the average people don't take all of them. The
traditional periods of holidays are August (especially in the two
middle August weeks almost nobody works, but the touristic things),
Christmas (on the average 10 days), Easter and for many who like
snowing a further floating week in february / march called the "white
week". Having Italy a strong touristic attitude (even though very
inefficiently exploited), consider that people going on holidays spend
money in that industrial segment, so having people to enjoy holidays
is also a way to keep the economy running. For instance, with the
latest increasing devolution, schools have adopted regional calendars
which take into account touristic attitudes - for instance, the white
week is often officially supported by school in the north.
